What does that wire color mean?

A quick visual guide to US/NEC conductor colors — what each one does and where you'll find it.

Electricity can kill. These are common US conventions — colors are not guaranteed, especially in older or DIY work. Always shut off the breaker and test every wire before touching it. When in doubt, hire a licensed electrician.

General reference for US/NEC color conventions — your local code, the AHJ, and the actual installation always govern. Never rely on color alone; verify de-energized with a meter or tester. Not a substitute for training or the NEC.
