DIY or take it to a shop?

Twelve common car jobs, each rated DIY-friendly, intermediate, or best left to a pro — with the tools, the rough time, and a clear flag on anything that touches your safety. Tap a job to open the full verdict.

These ratings are general guidance, not instructions — your exact car, skill level, and tools change the picture. Never get under a vehicle held up by only a jack — always use jack stands on level ground. Anything involving brakes, steering, fuel, airbags, or air-conditioning refrigerant should be done by a licensed mechanic. If you are unsure at any point, stop and take it in.

General, plain-language information only — not a repair manual or a diagnosis. "DIY-friendly" assumes the right tools, a service manual for your specific vehicle, and that you work safely. Difficulty varies widely by make and model, and some jobs that look simple have hidden steps. When in doubt, ask a qualified technician.
